Business
Subject Vision
The Business department at Bournville School aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn about the way in which businesses operate in the real world. In addition to the substantive knowledge gained in business, we aim to equip them in the longer term with employability skills, the ability to take advantage of business opportunities if they arise and resolve business problems to flourish in the future.
Aims
To know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society
- To apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts
- To develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems
- To investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating depth and breadth and understanding of business.
Intent
At Bournville All-Through School, students who choose GCSE Business follow a linear course that allows them to explore real business issues and understand how organisations operate in the modern world. The course combines essential business knowledge with opportunities to apply concepts to practical, real life situations, helping students develop a secure understanding of how businesses make decisions and respond to change.
Learning begins with two core units that provide the foundational knowledge students need. The first unit, Business in the Real World, introduces pupils to the purpose of business activity, the role of enterprise and entrepreneurship, and the dynamic nature of business. This is followed by Influences on Business, where students examine the external factors that shape business behaviour, including technological developments, economic conditions, globalisation and legal frameworks. As the course progresses, pupils deepen their understanding by studying the key functions within a business, such as operations, human resources, marketing and finance.
Regular retrieval practice helps students secure key knowledge, while frequent low stakes testing allows teachers to check understanding and address misconceptions promptly. Interleaving within lessons and through homework tasks enables pupils to revisit and strengthen their grasp of earlier content. Adaptive teaching ensures that all students are supported and challenged appropriately so they can achieve their full potential.
To broaden students’ horizons and build cultural capital, the curriculum extends beyond the specification. Pupils explore contemporary issues such as the decline of the high street, the impact of technology on consumer behaviour and the effects of Brexit and Covid on businesses. They develop their vocabulary and literacy skills through reading newspaper articles, analysing case studies and producing high quality written responses. Discussion is encouraged so that students can engage with local and global business news, strengthening their oracy and critical thinking. Entrepreneurial activities help pupils develop employability skills and prepare them for the workplace. Where possible, visiting speakers and educational visits enrich learning further and bring the subject to life.
