Intent

At Bournville All-Through School, our Music curriculum is designed to help pupils develop a deep awareness of the wider influences that shape musical traditions and practices. Children learn how historical, social and cultural factors have shaped music across time and place, enabling them to appreciate the diversity and richness of musical expression. This understanding helps pupils recognise music as a powerful form of communication that reflects the experiences, identities and values of different communities.

Creativity is central to our approach. Pupils are encouraged to work imaginatively when composing and performing, developing confidence in experimenting with sound, structure and musical ideas. They explore techniques suited to a variety of instruments, allowing them to build practical skills and discover the tools that best support their musical interests. Through regular opportunities to perform, pupils learn to express themselves with assurance and to take pride in their achievements.

In the primary phase we follow the CUSP Music curriuclum which is fully alligned to the National Curriculum.

The curriculum has been built using the following components:

Technical

Constructive

Expressive

Develop Foundation Skills (Literacy and Numeracy)

A key part of our curriculum is helping pupils understand the significance of music within different cultures and belief systems. By exploring musical traditions from around the world, children develop respect for diversity and gain insight into how music shapes celebrations, rituals and everyday life. This broad cultural understanding enriches their learning and strengthens their sense of global awareness.

We also place great value on the well-being benefits that music can offer. Pupils experience the calming, nurturing and expressive qualities of making music, and they learn how creativity can support emotional regulation and personal growth. Alongside this, they develop practical skills that link directly to future opportunities in performance, production, composition and the wider creative industries. Through Music, pupils gain confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation for the role the arts play in enriching our lives.
