Subject Vision

Our curriculum is founded on learners enjoying, participating in, and learning through physical activity while developing a passion for sport, exercise, and coaching. It is designed to inspire all learners to engage in challenging individual and team activities, while building an understanding of effective coaching, health, and well-being for life.

Aims

  • Engage learners in physical activity, developing enjoyment, confidence, and a positive relationship with sport.
  • Develop understanding of coaching principles, including planning, leadership, communication, and safe practice.
  • Apply coaching knowledge practically, supporting and reviewing individual and team activities.
  • Prepare learners for progression, promoting health, wellbeing, and future pathways in sport and physical activity.

Intent

The NOCN Level 2 Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport curriculum is built on the belief that learners thrive when they enjoy, participate in, and learn through physical activity. Our aim is to nurture a genuine passion for sport, exercise, and coaching by providing engaging, practical experiences that develop confidence, competence, and a strong understanding of how to support others in their sporting journey.

The curriculum inspires all learners to take part in a wide range of individual and team activities, encouraging them to challenge themselves physically and intellectually. Through this, students build a secure foundation in the principles of effective coaching, including communication, motivation, planning, and safe practice. A strong emphasis is placed on health, wellbeing, and the positive impact that physical activity can have throughout life.

Learning is structured to develop both technical knowledge and practical coaching skills, preparing students for real world coaching environments. By the end of the course, learners are equipped with the understanding, behaviours, and confidence needed to progress into further study, apprenticeships within the physical activity sector. The overarching intent is to develop capable, reflective, and enthusiastic young coaches who are ready to make a positive contribution to sport and their wider community.

The curriculum has been built using the following components:
