Subject Vision

Our science curriculum inspires students’ curiosity and wonder about the world we live in. It makes science relevant to our diverse students and develops a solid grounding in scientific knowledge, understanding and principles.  It facilitates the development of lifelong learners, in an ever changing scientific and technological society.

Aims

  • Develop scientific knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help to answer scientific questions and enable research.
  • Equip individuals with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future, building lifelong learners that contribute to society.

Intent

Bournville’s Science Department is dedicated to delivering an engaging, high quality science education that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong passion for learning. The curriculum builds secure knowledge across biology, chemistry, and physics, encouraging students to question, investigate, and apply scientific ideas to real world contexts.

The department prioritises scientific literacy, ensuring students can interpret information, evaluate evidence, and participate confidently in scientific discussions. Teaching is adaptive and inclusive, offering challenge for the most able and targeted support where needed, with a strong emphasis on practical work, collaboration, and varied learning experiences.

Continual improvement underpins the department’s approach, with regular curriculum reviews and the use of up to date research, technologies, and resources. Opportunities beyond the classroom—such as clubs, competitions, and enrichment activities—further inspire students. Ultimately, the aim is to empower all learners with the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm needed to succeed in a scientific and technological world.

The curriculum has been built using the following components:
