Water Mill Primary Pupils Make a Splash at Bournville School Visit

Year 6 pupils from Water Mill Primary enjoyed finding out about life at Bournville All-Through School during a visit which was organised as part of the school’s transition programme.

The day focused on STEM subjects with fun activities that challenged the children to design and make paper boats and put them to the test in a tank of water.

The pupils were given toy money to buy extra materials and improve their designs. They could earn more money if their boats stayed afloat when loaded with weights.

Year 6 teacher Mrs Beasley said: “The visit to Bournville was an amazing experience!

“I honestly didn’t know the children had so much creativity!

“It was a really good opportunity for pupils from different schools to show exactly what they can do.”

Bournville Assistant Principal Mr Beaufoy said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome the children from Water Mill to Bournville, and they really got involved in the challenge we set them.

“This was one of our STEM days, which form part of a programme we are running for local primary schools.

“The children were given a budget and had to draw up a shopping list of everything they needed to make a boat. They then bought their materials and worked together to build it.

“Then they tested it on the water as weights were placed on top.

“The challenge encouraged the children to reflect, work together and learn through hands-on experience. It also helped them see how science, technology, engineering and maths are all linked.”

After the STEM challenge, the pupils were given a guided tour of Bournville School’s impressive site.
