Subject Vision
All students, regardless of their starting point and background, develop a love of language, an enjoyment of reading and embark on a journey to become articulate and confident communicators.
Aims
- Read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
- Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
- Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
- Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- Use discussion in order to learn. Pupils should be able to elaborate and clearly explain their understanding and ideas.
- Be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
Intent
Our English curriculum aims to ensure that every student, whatever their starting point, develops a genuine love of language, a passion for reading, and the confidence to communicate effectively. The five‑year programme is broad, challenging and enriching, exposing students to a wide range of literature, non‑fiction and writing opportunities while steadily building the knowledge and skills needed for academic success and life in modern Britain.
Cultural capital is deliberately woven through the curriculum, with key concepts and contextual knowledge introduced early to support deeper understanding at GCSE. Students explore diverse texts, cultures and ideas, developing critical thinking, empathy and a strong sense of voice. Reading is central, with structured opportunities to read widely, expand vocabulary and strengthen comprehension. Writing is practised daily, supported by live feedback and explicit teaching of effective sentence construction, vocabulary choice and academic style.
Overall, the curriculum is designed to be rigorous, enjoyable and transformative, enabling students to leave Bournville not only with excellent results, but with pride in their learning journey and a lasting appreciation of English.
