Curriculum Journey

Science

Subject Vision

Our science curriculum inspires students’ curiosity and wonder about the world we live in. It makes science relevant to our diverse students and develops a solid grounding in scientific knowledge, understanding and principles. It facilitates the development of lifelong learners, in an ever changing scientific and technological society.

Aims

  • Develop scientific knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help to answer scientific questions and enable research.
  • Equip individuals with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future, building lifelong learners that contribute to society.

Intent

The Science Department at Bournville is committed to providing a high-quality, engaging, and inspiring science education for all students. We believe that science is fundamental to understanding the world around us, and we strive to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm they need to thrive in an increasingly scientific and technological society. Our curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. We aim to develop students’ scientific literacy, enabling them to confidently interpret scientific information, evaluate evidence, and engage in informed discussions about scientific issues.

The curriculum has been built using the following components:

(Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

Substantive Knowledge

We encourage students to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop their own scientific explanations through hands-on investigations and practical work. We believe in a broad and balanced science education, covering the key concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. Our curriculum is structured to build upon prior learning, ensuring that students develop a deep and secure understanding of scientific principles. We are committed to providing opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, fostering an appreciation for the relevance and importance of science in their lives.

We provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment where every student can reach their full potential. We recognise that students learn at different paces and in different ways, and we are committed to adaptive teaching strategies that cater to the diverse needs of all learners. We employ a range of teaching methods, including practical investigations, group work, discussions, and presentations, to ensure that all students are engaged and challenged. We actively seek opportunities to stretch and challenge our most able students, whilst also providing targeted support for those who require it.

We are committed to continuous improvement and regularly review our curriculum and teaching practices to ensure that they are effective and aligned with the latest research in science education. We strive to provide our students with access to the latest technologies and resources, and we encourage them to explore science beyond the classroom through extracurricular activities, science clubs, and competitions. Our ultimate aim is to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators, and to empower all our students with the scientific knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the 21st century.
