Intent
The Bournville School Physical Education (PE) department aims to provide a high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring curriculum that fosters a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles in all students. We believe that participation in a broad and balanced PE programme is essential for developing students’ physical literacy, mental well-being, and social skills. Our curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in physical activity throughout their lives, promoting both physical and mental health.
Develop Physical Literacy: We aim to develop fundamental movement skills, sports-specific skills, and tactical awareness across a range of activities. Students will progressively build competence in a variety of sports and physical activities, including individual pursuits, team games, and outdoor adventurous activities. We strive to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, acquire the physical literacy needed to participate confidently and competently in physical activity.
Promote Health and Well-being: We believe that physical activity plays a crucial role in promoting both physical and mental wellbeing. Our curriculum educates students about the benefits of regular exercise, healthy eating, and the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle. We aim to empower students to make informed choices about their health and well-being, both now and in the future.
Cultivate Positive Attitudes: We encourage students to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, promoting enjoyment, participation, and sportsmanship. We foster a supportive and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and encouraged to participate to the best of their ability. We aim to instil values such as teamwork, respect, resilience, and fair play.
Develop Leadership and Teamwork Skills: We provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and teamwork skills through participation in team games, group activities, and leadership roles. We encourage students to communicate effectively, cooperate with others, and take responsibility for their actions.
The curriculum has been built using the following components:
Motor Competence
Rules, Strategies and Tactics
Healthy Participation
Develop Foundation Skills (Literacy and Numeracy)
Prepare for Lifelong Participation: Our ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to engage in lifelong physical activity. We aim to provide a foundation that enables students to pursue their chosen activities and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle beyond school. Implementation: We will achieve our intent through: * A Broad and Balanced Curriculum: Offering a diverse range of activities that cater to different interests and abilities, including traditional team sports, individual pursuits, and alternative activities.
High-Quality Teaching: Delivering engaging and inspiring lessons that are underpinned by sound pedagogical principles. Our teachers are committed to continuous professional development to ensure they are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills.
Adaptive Teaching: Employing adaptive teaching strategies to cater to the diverse needs of all learners. This includes differentiating activities, providing varied levels of challenge, and offering appropriate support to ensure all students can make progress. We will use a range of assessment methods to identify individual needs and tailor our teaching accordingly. * Challenge: Providing appropriate challenge within lessons to stretch and extend students’ abilities. We will encourage students to push themselves beyond their comfort zones and strive for continuous improvement. This includes setting individual targets, providing opportunities for competition, and promoting a growth mindset.
Extracurricular Opportunities: Offering a wide range of extracurricular clubs and activities to further enhance students’ engagement in physical activity and provide opportunities for specialisation and competition.
Long-Term Engagement: Encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity through promoting healthy lifestyle choices and providing information on local opportunities. By consistently implementing this curriculum intent, the Bournville School PE department strives to empower students to lead healthy, active, and fulfilling lives.
