RE

Subject Vision

The Religious Education (RE) curriculum at Bournville School helps students to develop their own cultural and spiritual identify and understand aspects of cultural and religious difference. For some students, it is a way of learning more about their own religion. Our curriculum challenges and widens their views of themselves and people in the world around them. It encourages students to ask some of life’s big philosophical questions and develop their own sense of wonder of both religious and non-religious belief.

Aims

  • Investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views through questioning and discussion.
  • Investigate how religions and other world views influence morality, identity and diversity.
  • To identify and question similarities and differences between views.
  • To develop students Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural understanding.
  • To enable students to have acceptance of and engagement with Fundamental British Values.

Intent

Our RE curriculum has been thoughtfully crafted to reflect the values and high expectations of Bournville All-Through School. We have refined and strengthened our approach to ensure pupils develop a rich, secure understanding of religion and world views as they move through the school.

We base our all-through curriculum on guidance from Birmingham SACRE. The curriculum sets out, with clarity and precision, the knowledge and disciplinary skills pupils will build at each stage of their learning. Each unit works towards clearly defined endpoints, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections and deepen their understanding over time. This careful sequencing supports strong progression and ensures that every learner is challenged, inspired, and well prepared for the next step in their education.

We hold high aspirations for all pupils. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and responsive, with adaptations made where necessary so that every child can access the full breadth and ambition of the subject.

Our curriculum is shaped by the following key components:

Substantive Knowledge

Ways of Knowing

(Where do I stand?)

Personal Knowledge

(Literacy and Numeracy)

Develop Foundation Skills

Our RE curriculum forms culturally aware students who question their own spirituality and think deeply about both religious and non-religious beliefs. All students will leave school with the ability to discuss the impact of religion on the world.

The RE lessons at Bournville School give students the opportunity to explore beliefs and religions different to their own and for some students it is a way of learning more about their own religion. Each of the six major world faiths are explored through: beliefs, practices and ethical application. Non-religious attitudes are also explored through atheism generally and humanism specifically. Through this knowledge, students explore the Fundamental British values of ‘Individual liberty’ by looking at their own religion, and ‘Mutual respect and tolerance’ by looking at the religions of others, and key beliefs from them. By focusing not only on the six main faiths but also other beliefs students are able to explore their ‘Spirituality’ and link it to how they behave and treat others.
