On Friday 13th February, our Year 7 students took part in an exciting Samba drumming workshop led by Nick from Glamba Drumming. The session was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the energy and rhythm of Brazilian percussion first-hand.
During the workshop, students were introduced to a range of traditional Samba instruments, including the Surdo drums, which provide the “heartbeat” and steady tempo of a percussion ensemble. Nick shared stories from the carnivals and performances he has been involved in, bringing the vibrant world of Samba to life and inspiring the students with real-life musical experiences.
It was wonderful to see the students working collaboratively as they learned and layered different rhythms. Together, they confidently performed the iconic beat of “We Will Rock You,” with two brave students stepping up to lead the ensemble vocally. As the session progressed, students rose to the challenge of incorporating more complex rhythms, demonstrating growing confidence, teamwork, and musical skill.
The workshop created a lively and supportive atmosphere, filled with enthusiasm and smiling faces. It was a privilege to see our students thriving in a different learning environment, embracing creativity and performance. The overwhelmingly positive feedback reflects what a memorable and enriching experience it was, and we look forward to building on this success in future productions and showcases.
