On Wednesday 4th June we travelled to New Street Station to see the unveiling of a collaborative artwork that our Year 8 students had created for Rail 200. The aim of the project was to create an artwork that explored the connection between West Midlands businesses and the railway. We selected the NEC as we believe that this is an iconic venue that hosts a range of entertainment events which is accessible to all.
The design process began in art club where students completed research on the history of the NEC and then created thumbnail sketches which were then refined and redrafted. The result of this was a vibrant digital artwork which shows a train leaving the city centre at sunset on its way to Birmingham International station for an evening of entertainment.
The exhibition can be seen by members of the public outside the main entrance to the station. We feel privileged to have our artwork on display in such a prime location along with five other local schools. We enjoyed looking at the other pieces on display and were amazed by the range of styles and approaches to the theme. After the speeches and the unveiling we were treated to a behind the scenes tour around New Street Station and goodie bags.
It was a fantastic morning, and it was lovely to see students being inspired by the event and sketching in the taxi on the way back to school. We are so proud of our students. This will be a day that we will not forget.
