Subject Vision

Moulding ambitious students with a robust knowledge of real-life choices, our whole school approach will give students the chance to discuss and develop themselves as a complete citizen in Bournville, Birmingham, Britain and beyond in the 21st teachers. Our character education is central to the development of these skills.

Aims

The whole school study of PSHE at Bournville allows each pupil to develop their character and skills by covering the following areas:

  • Careers
  • Finance
  • Personal values
  • Being a citizen
  • Relationships & Sex education
  • Health education

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum, which incorporates both Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Religious Education, has been thoughtfully developed to reflect the high expectations and values of Bournville All-Through School. It sets out a clear and ambitious framework for pupils’ personal development, outlining the knowledge, understanding and skills they will build at each stage of their journey.

In the primary phase, we develop the curriculum though Jigsaw which is full aligned to the National Curriculum for PSHE and the statutory elements of RSE.

The curriculum identifies well-defined endpoints that pupils work towards, with learning carefully sequenced to ensure strong progression over time. This structured approach enables pupils to deepen their understanding, make meaningful connections and develop the confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world.

We hold high academic ambition for every pupil. Our curriculum is inclusive and responsive, with adaptations made where needed so that all children can access the full breadth and challenge of the subject. Alongside the taught curriculum, pupils benefit from a wide range of personal development opportunities that are deliberately planned to enrich their wider experience of school life at Bournville All-Through School.

The curriculum is shaped by the following components from the Relationships and Sex Education guidance:

Respectful Relationships, Including Freindships

Being Safe

The core principle of PSHE is to help provide our students with the knowledge and skills required to allow them to flourish as future citizens in modern Britain. Our character education is central to the development of these skills and provides a key focus for our students each half term. Our character traits are linked directly to our PSHE and are infiltrated into all areas of school life, ensuring we are taking a holistic approach in the development of our students.
