Intent
At Bournville All-Through School, we want every pupil to enjoy Art as a subject that encourages exploration, experimentation and self expression. Our curriculum is designed to help children develop confidence in expressing themselves articulately and clearly, both through their artwork and through discussion about their creative choices. We place strong emphasis on enabling pupils to explore how artists respond to themes such as the environment, identity and architecture, helping them understand how art connects to the world around them.
The curriculum has been built using the following components:
Produce Creative Outcomes
Develop Proficient Skills
Evaluate Creative Works
Understand Great Artists
In the primary phase we use the CUSP Art curriculum which is fully aligned to the National Curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to personalise their work, using Art as a space to express their emotions, experiences and ambitions. They study a diverse range of artists and designers from different cultures, broadening their understanding of artistic traditions and helping them appreciate the richness of global creativity. Through this, pupils learn to value different perspectives and recognise the cultural significance of artistic expression.
Our curriculum introduces children to a wide range of themes, concepts and cross curricular links. For example, pupils explore sustainability through English and Geography, or develop their understanding of patterns when studying Islamic Art. These connections help pupils see how Art enriches their wider learning and deepens their understanding of other subjects.
Progression is built into every stage of the curriculum. Pupils revisit and layer knowledge and skills over time, enabling them to refine techniques, develop confidence and produce increasingly sophisticated work. This structured approach ensures that children can clearly see their own development as young artists.
Above all, we want pupils to understand the world around them and recognise the value of Art in supporting their wellbeing. Through creative exploration, reflection and expression, pupils learn that Art is not only a subject to be studied but a powerful tool for personal growth, emotional understanding and lifelong enjoyment.
