Bournville Celebrates World Book Day with Creativity and Costumes

primary world book day class

Students and staff at Bournville School celebrated World Book Day with a day full of imagination, storytelling, and fun activities across both the primary and secondary phases.

Secondary Students Inspired by Stories

In the secondary phase, the day began with a series of assemblies to launch a new reading initiative designed to encourage students to develop a stronger reading habit. As part of the new policy, students are now encouraged to bring a book to school every day as part of their essential equipment, ensuring they always have something to read and helping to build a culture of reading throughout the school.

Teachers also embraced the spirit of the day by dressing up as well-known literary characters, much to the delight of students. The costumes sparked conversations about favourite books and authors and helped bring stories to life in the classroom.

Students were also invited to take part in a creative writing competition, where they must write their own original story that includes a character from an existing book. The competition aims to inspire creativity while encouraging students to engage more deeply with the books they love.

Primary Pupils Join the Celebration

In the primary phase, the celebrations were just as lively. Staff and students arrived in fantastic costumes, representing a wide range of beloved characters from children’s literature.

Throughout the day, pupils took part in book-themed activities linked to stories they had been reading in class. One particularly popular activity was making marmalade sandwiches, inspired by the adventures of Paddington Bear, which allowed children to connect a favourite story with a hands-on experience.

A Day to Share and Celebrate Reading

The primary school’s celebrations ended with a special assembly, where classes shared the activities they had taken part in and reflected on the stories they had explored throughout the day. It was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to celebrate their learning and enthusiasm for reading.

World Book Day at Bournville All-Through School was a joyful reminder of the power of books to spark imagination, creativity, and curiosity. From costumes and creative writing to storytelling and tasty literary treats, the day helped reinforce our commitment to encouraging a lifelong love of reading among students.
