Swine Flu Update
Now that the Health Authority is no longer testing for swine flu in most cases, it is difficult
to know clearly how many children are affected in our school. Our attendance levels are just a
little lower than normal, but there is a sickness bug about, and 'ordinary' flu, both of which
have spread around the school. Two youngsters have been confirmed with swine flu in the last week,
but they had already been off school for several days when diagnosed.
It is worth saying that Birmingham Local Authority's advice is that the school should remain open
and it will be 'business as usual' unless staffing levels fall significantly. This is because Swine
Flu is recognised as a mild illness, with symptoms no worse than those of a mild cold and, from which
people make a speedy and full recovery.
Could we take this opportunity to remind people that the best way of preventing infection is through
the maintenance of normal good hygiene procedures. The use of tissues when coughing or sneezing (which
should be disposed of immediately after use), and the frequent washing of hands are essential in stopping
the spread of any infections. We have no objection if parents wish to provide their children with small
bottles of antiseptic hand wash to help maintain good hygiene.
