Personal Safety - travelling to and from school

Dear Pupils,

Firstly may I take this opportunity to welcome you to your new school which works in partnership with Bournville Lane Police station in order to offer you a safe and secure learning environment.

Now that you have begun attending your new school it will be, for many of you the first time that you have travelled via public transport, and I feel it necessary to provide you with some basic safety advice to ensure a safe journey. You may be in possession of some very expensive items such as mobile telephones and MP3 Players, and I wish to make you aware of the risks of carrying such items on your person to and from your place of education.

I would be grateful if you could take note of the following crime prevention advice:

  • Keep valuables out of sight, especially items such as mobile phones, ipods & MP3 players.
  • Always lock the keypad on your phone with a PIN number.
  • Record your mobile phone's IMEI number by pressing *#06# on your keypad and then writing the number down in a safe place.
  • Mark all belongings with your using your postcode, using an ultra violet marker.
  • If anyone asks to use your phone in an emergency - don't give it to them.
  • If you think you are being followed.
    • cross the street several times.
    • Get to a busy place such as a shop.
    • Seek help from someone such as a shopkeeper.
    • Shout clear instructions such as "call the Police".
  • Try not to travel alone.
  • If you are frightened dial 999.
  • Try not to leave valuable items unattended i.e. in lockers or bags.

This is not an exhaustive list but could prevent you from becoming victims of crime.
