Year group and topic recommended reading lists are available in the library. They are circulated via registers and the English Department, as appropriate. New lists can be produced to suit individual needs, by request.
Accelerated Reader, an independent reading software programme, operates in the Library and can be used by staff with teaching and/or form groups to extend students' reading. This involves students being assessed to determine their reading level, then reading from a recommended list and completing quizzes, which show levels of understanding. Resulting diagnostic information is available for staff. Quizzes will be linked with Micro Librarian in the near future.
Library clubs
The Library Homework Club operates daily, during extra-curricular opening hours. Pupils have a membership card, which is stamped each time they can provide evidence that they are doing homework or other individual learning activities, in the Library, in their own time. Griffin awards after blocks of stamps, as well as end of term prizes, provide incentive for members.
Wednesday Afternoon Activities
A variety of activities happen in the Library on Wednesday afternoons. These include: Homework Club, reading for fun, board and computer games, mind-bending puzzles, national and local book event celebrations, national and local book award reading groups, competitions and quizzes and the annual Librarian Training Course. In addition, special one-off events, including craft sessions, visiting speakers and suchlike, are held at intervals. Activities are promoted via form groups.
Subject clubs
Students and Staff wishing to hold subject clubs in the Library can do this by booking in advance. One-off times or blocks of sessions are available. MAM will be present to help and support as requested.
