Careers Gateway: How do I find a placement?

The first thing you need to do is get the names, addresses and phone numbers of businesses you would like to apply to. Click on the 'where can I do my work experience' section for ideas or use www.yell.com to search for local businesses.

Then you need to make contact with the business and ask them if they will take you on for work experience. The best way to contact them is to either:

Phone them

This is often the best way to find a placement Phone and say something along the lines of:

"Hello, my name is ........ , I'm a pupil at Bournville school and I was just phoning to ask if you have any work experience placements for July"

Remember you must introduce yourself and be polite, if you don't make a good impression then they won't want you on work experience.

Write to them
A lot of businesses will ask you to write a letter. You can download a letter template  HERE. Fill in the letter and bring it to the careers area next to B30 and we'll post it for you.

Visit them
Pop into the organisation on your way home from school or at the weekend, explain who you are and ask if they do work experience placements. Businesses are often impressed with pupils who are confident enough to visit businesses.
