What is Labour Market Information (LMI)?

Broadly speaking labour market Information is about the demand and supply of labour to undertake different types of work.

The demand side is about the demand or need for certain types of labour from employers. It therefore relates to the nature and types of jobs available in what is termed the labour market. This therefore includes information on the:

  • Job sectors that are expanding and declining
  • The changing nature of work (for example, the increase in part time work and more flexible working)
  • Skills and qualifications that employers need and value to do the jobs available in the labour market

The supply side relates to the people that make up the workforce. It therefore relates to the characteristics, skills and changing nature of the population that make up the existing and potential workforce. The supply side therefore includes information on:

  • Employment, unemployment and travel to work patterns
  • How the population is changing in terms of age, gender and ethnicity
  • Disadvantaged groups in the labour market
